I shared the above quote in my book The Chaos-Free Bride-to-Be, and it still makes me smile every time I see it, because that’s what your time leading up to your elopement and honeymoon should be filled with: lots of kisses. And peace!
When it comes to elopement weddings, they’re not always surrounded with peace and positivity for a number of reasons. Your family might not be thrilled about the fact that you’re eloping and they might air those grievances or you might be trying to plan your wedding from overseas and find it stressful.
At the end of the day, you’ve chosen to elope because you absolutely love the person you’re with and you want to have a meaningful moment with just the two of you. Here’s how you can ensure that your elopement is filled with peace, happiness, and intimacy.
Choose a Location that Feels Peaceful TO YOU
Some people find charming city streets full of activity and bustle peaceful and inspirational. Others find the crashing waves against the ocean shore a beckon of calm.
Don’t worry about someone else’s definition of peaceful. When it comes to selecting your elopement location, make sure you’ve chosen a destination that evokes peace within you. If the thought of the venue or destination stirs up anxiety or feelings of tension, pay attention to those feelings. Could you select a different location? Your friend might have had an amazing elopement wedding in Bali, but what do you and your future spouse find peaceful? What do you long for in a getaway or destination? Choose something that fits your definition of peaceful.
Indulge in Aromatherapy (or pack your essential oils)
Countless studies confirm that smells impact our moods. Use this to your advantage by indulging in a couples aromatherapy massage, an infused bubble bath in your honeymoon suite, or pack your essential oil blends and use them liberally leading up to (and after!) your big moment.
Essential oil scents such as lavender, neroli, ylang ylang, and rose are all calming and centering oils that can have a positive impact on the peace you experience during your elopement.
When you’re at peace, you’ll see it and sense it in your wedding photos. From the glow on your cheeks to the light in your eyes, you’ll remember how at ease you felt and others will see it when they go through your pictures, too.
Say Morning and Night Affirmations or Prayers
Clearing your mind, focusing on positive thoughts, releasing bitterness, unforgiveness, or anger, and praying are excellent practices to begin and end your day with. These practices help you shed stress and negativity multiple times throughout the day so tension and frustration don’t build and take root within you.
Take a moment at the beginning and end of each day to clear your mind, let any hurts or frustrations go, and focus on what you’re grateful for. This may seem like a small practice, but doing this consistently is a very powerful tool that can help not only transform your outlook and emotions but positively direct the course of your actions and habits.
Ask for Help
Just because you’re eloping alone does not mean you have to “go it alone.” When it comes to wedding planning, hire a planner to support you and handle the logistics and admin.
If you’re packing, invite a friend over for coffee and advice on what swimsuit or dress looks best. Need some errands run? Practice your “pretty please” with a sibling or parent. If you don’t ask, you don’t receive and most people are always willing to help especially if you have a great rapport and a healthy give-and-take relationship.
And don’t forget to ask your partner for the support you need. You found someone you can walk hand-in-hand with and a shoulder to lean on for life, so be transparent with where you need some extra help.
Get Proper Rest, Water, and Nutrition
Adequate rest, water, and nutrition really are the key elements to just about everything peaceful and positive. Water is incredibly important for energy and vitality, and if you’re not eating well and getting the vitamins and nutrients you need, your immune system won’t be as strong, which means you’ll be more susceptible to colds, flu, and other illnesses.
Is there anything less peaceful than getting sick before, during, or following your wedding day? Rest well, eat well, and drink lots of water and not only will you feel so much more at ease, but you’ll physically look so much more at ease due to proper hydration and sustenance, too!
